IT has been ten years since the original The Fast And The Furious film became a surprise hit and this franchise is showing no signs of slowing down. This latest entry goes up yet another gear in the action stakes.
Picking up right after the end of the previous film, we're not 30 seconds in before Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) are breaking Dom (Vin Diesel) out of a moving prison bus.
Being wanted fugitives in the US, the gang head to Rio de Janeiro. Needing some income to survive, they take a job robbing luxury cars from a train.
It's the film's best action sequence, as enjoyable as it is utterly ridiculous. Unfortunately this lands them in hot water with cartoonish crime kingpin Reyes (Joaquim de Almeida) - also on the hit list of elite law enforcement agent Hobbs (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). The rest of the film plays out like a car-based Ocean's Eleven. Diesel and Johnson go mano-a-mano in a fight we've all kind of wanted to see before we're treated to a demolition derby with enough cop car carnage to rival the climax of The Blues Brothers.
Director Justin Lin delivers enough spectacle to make up for the predictable dialogue and unbelievable romance but this is a Fast And Furious movie and it does what it sets out to do with style.
